With over 18 years of experience, Dr Poh Seng Yew is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip, knee, shoulder and elbow surgery, sports medicine, and trauma surgery. Using advanced arthroscopic, minimally invasive, and open surgical techniques, Dr Poh offers a full spectrum of joint preservation and joint replacement options to ensure appropriate, effective treatment for all patients.
Having special interest in hip preservation surgery, Dr Poh is the first fully fellowship trained surgeon in this area in Singapore. He established the Singhealth Joint Hip Preservation Service, focusing on interventions to treat hip disease with the aim of preserving the native hip joint and delaying, or preventing hip arthritis and the need for hip replacement. These include techniques such as hip arthroscopy, open surgical dislocation and periacetabular osteotomy.
Through the years, Dr Poh has been invited as regional and international faculty and is active in training surgeons from around Asia through fellowship and visitation programs, in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Hip Preservation Surgery. He is a key opinion leader in the development of new hip arthroscopy techniques and is one of the highest volume hip arthroscopy surgeons in Southeast Asia, having performed over 500 such procedures to date.
Aside from hip arthroscopy, Dr Poh also does complex knee arthroscopy, osteotomy, multi-ligamentous ligament reconstruction, meniscal reconstruction, cartilage resurfacing, and complex shoulder arthroscopy, open shoulder reconstruction and shoulder arthroplasty. He has a high volume of hip and knee arthroplasty, and is adept at using the latest techniques, such as robotic assisted surgery, patient specific instrumentation and navigation.
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various knee joint-related problems. It involves the use of a small, specialised camera called an arthroscope, which is inserted through small incisions in the knee. The arthroscope allows the surgeon to view the inside of the knee joint on a monitor and perform surgical procedures or knee treatments as needed. Commonly used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, knee arthroscopy is employed in various conditions, including knee injuries, arthritis, and unexplained knee pain.
With his wealth of experience in trauma surgery, Dr Poh is currently the Community Development Officer for the AOTrauma Singapore and often represents Singapore in courses and conferences in Orthopaedic trauma.
Despite his busy schedule, Dr Poh also holds concurrent positions as Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, sharing his experience and knowledge with aspiring medical students and trainee surgeons. Dr Poh also serves as Orthopaedic Surgery examiner for both the basic medical and postgraduate Orthopaedic Surgery examinations.
